When my old friend Michael Lappin took a role at Ligl (formerly Vertical Discovery) I knew that I needed to see what had lured him there. Ligl is providing what they call an ‘orchestration hub’ for corporate and firm eDiscovery teams. Despite MSFT’s efforts and the ongoing eDiscovery market consolidation, most of these teams are still cobbling together ‘Frankentech’ to track and manage their eDiscovery lifecycle. I frequently encounter elaborate SharePoint sites, custom Relativity modules, Google worksheets and other homemade tracking solutions in client assessments. The market dominant eDiscovery platforms have been racing to create better reporting and process automation to address this issue. Instead of building yet another processing-review platform, Ligl has built a rather elegant consolidation hub that manages different systems from legal hold through production through integrations with dozens of data sources and eDiscovery systems.
Ligl seems to have started with a legal hold and collection system with the connectors for in-place preservation and data mapping. They have leveraged their partner-based integrations to full automation of the downstream EDRM lifecycle. Their interface has strong dashboards and pretty mature usability (i.e. you do not have jump through hundreds of screens or write scripts). I appreciate the bi-directional integration from the downstream, a feature lacking in most eDiscovery platforms. Mature corporate legal teams need to understand the eDiscovery volume funnel to optimize their processes and demonstrate the impact of smart relevance determination. Ligl is priced by the volume of holds and connectors.
