When working with eDiscovery professionals, eDJ analysts encounter a common question: which education and certification programs are worthwhile for advancing my career? It is a question for which there is not an easy, straightforward answer. First, the practice of eDiscovery is just starting to gain some maturity and training and certification in the market is relatively new. That creates an opportunity for educational programs and certifications to potentially thrive – and because of that, many programs have come to the market.
In order to provide an answer to our clients, eDJ seeks to understand the available eDiscovery and related information governance education, certification and training programs. Please note that training and certification are two different things. We view any informational program as education and training. Certification, though, is knowledge-based recognition of an individual who shows a competency on the guidelines, codes and standards as set by the certifying organization. As part of this research, eDJ will look to answer the following questions:
- What types of training and certification programs are available?
- What do these eDiscovery education programs actually teach and quantify knowledge of?
- Which certifications provide real or perceived value?
- What are the origins of these programs?
- What are the incentives of the organizations that offer training and certification?
- How do certifications affect the employment prospects of those certified?
In order to provide as much information as possible, we will take a four-pronged approach to this research. First, eDJ analysts are conducting interviews with the providers of training and certification. Second, eDJ analysts are interviewing individuals that have gone through various educational programs to better understand the rigors of the program and satisfaction of participants. Third, eDJ will interview eDiscovery executive search consultants to understand the value and return on investment educational programs can have from a career perspective. And finally, eDJ is conducing a survey about opinions on various education programs.
This particular survey seeks to gauge how eDiscovery professionals view the importance of education and certification programs, the awareness of existing programs, and how much respect each various individual programs have within the market.
