With the Ontrack Inview and Ontrack Advanceview brands going away, it should be easier for prospects and customers to better understand what they are buying from Kroll Ontrack under the eDiscovery.com brand, while still seeing that the underlying architecture is unified with legacy technologies.

Converting Kroll Ontrack’s project infrastructure from managing high volume matters to large numbers of low volume matters is a challenge that has defeated others who bet on variations of the ‘enterprise pricing’ game.

The company recognizes that the biggest reason that prospects did not work with them was high price. Recognition of that fact is a new thing for Kroll and it takes time to change the direction and market perception of a large company present from the start of the eDiscovery industry. Recognition of that fact and the desire to change product direction are the reasons they launched new products under the eDiscovery.com brand (eDiscovery.com Collect, eDiscovery.com Manage, eDiscovery.Review). This is tempered by the fact that eDiscovery.com offerings only come in at a lower price for very savvy customers who know how to or are willing to near-line content to lower storage price.

The eDiscovery.com offering is an interesting one. It gives Kroll Ontrack the opportunity to shed its previous reputation in the marketplace, but only if the company can help its customers actually reduce their eDiscovery spend with eDiscovery.com Review and gain more insight into project metrics with eDiscovery.com Manage (which may be a lot harder than any of them expect).

Kroll Ontrack has been a leading service and technology provider in the eDiscovery market for over a decade. Since the company was spun out of Marsh & McLennan and ultimately picked up by private equity firm, Altegrity, there was initially a lull in strategic activity. But, recently, the company has pushed hard in the software market with its Verve offering. Verve (SaaS do-it-yourself eDiscovery software) counters the traditional reputation of Kroll Ontrack as the most expensive provider in the market. The company is keeping pace with advanced TAR offerings and seems to be transitioning to more of a software company than a service provider. This could create tricky relationships in the channel where some players are used to Kroll Ontrack as a competitor and not a partner. Look for 2013 to be the next evolution of Kroll Ontrack with even more emphasis on software.
