While HP, former Autonomy management and Deloitte all struggle over the acquisition fall out, HP is pushing IDOL OnDemand cloud platform and trying to entice open development on the APIs that they have opened up. From the eDJ perspective, it appears as if they are following MSFT, Google, Amazon cloud Saas infrastructure strategy. 'Build it and they will develop it.' This strategy is dependent on a mature SDK, support community and trust that the platform will have longevity. Development is investment, pure and simple.

HP/Autonomy had all the pieces put together to potentially offer an eDiscovery platform that could support the full lifecycle. Instead, integration issues after HP’s acquisition of Autonomy led to poor sales performance that disappointed HP’s management, according to the company’s Q2 2012 earnings call. There have been questions about some of the Autonomy products and their ability to perform as advertised. Even the positive customer references that Autonomy has given eDJ Group have pointed out the heavy customization necessary to make the products work and the high cost of infrastructure investment required.. That said, the Autonomy product management team seems to be making progress in consolidating the eDiscovery products into a consumable platform. We had wondered how Autonomy would handle the product overlap from its many acquisitions over the last ten years. The consolidated Autonomy eDiscovery Appliance Software and Private Cloud Service integrates the functionality of the Introspect, Stratify, and Investigator products into a new dynamic dashboard. The search and review interfaces incorporate meaning based predictive recommendations without additional fees or indexes. Overall, the fresh interface and lower adoption threshold of this appliance/cloud offering may help HP bring those sales numbers back up. With a new management team in place to run the Autonomy business, there is hope that the Autonomy unit can mesh with HP’s complementary divisions. Prospects and customers should keep a close eye on HP’s strategic plans for Autonomy before making any decisions. Despite some of the turbulence after the acquisition issues, HP/Autonomy has been able to retain some key talent, which will be the important to Autonomy’s future success.
