Catalyst has invested heavily in building out channel partners and local presence in Asia. The recent publication of a Korean-language book on eDiscovery for Korean business leaders is a good example of this kind of investment. eDJ believes that US based eDiscovery companies will need a global network for long term growth outside of our saturated market.

Asian eDiscovery Note: Catalyst is becoming a stronger player in the Asian eDiscovery market with their processing engine. Functionally they have an Ops Center in Japan and have several sales people focused on that market. As of June 2013, many of the CJK projects utilized the Equivio engine, but Insight will be up and running with integrated predictive technologies by year's end which will allow for single instance mulit-matter management capabilities. Catalyst currently has approximately 15 different alliance partners in the region utilizing the Catalyst engine. Catalyst seems highly committed to linguistic analytics and has hired Ph.D linguists to help with searching CJK documents, which could help the company differentiate from what others are doing.

Catalyst continues to gain market traction by taking the road less traveled. Their early decision to invest heavily in a true private cloud infrastructure and the scalable Mark Logic XML based search index have allowed them to move from direct global clients to resale partnerships with large providers such as Lighthouse eDiscovery. Where most providers try to differentiate with price and service packages on the same platform, Catalyst is moving into competition with kCura without the third party license costs.

Summary

Topic: DESCRIPTION Date: 2013-01-06 15:48:27

Catalyst has a solid offering and a good reputation for scalability and security (especially important for a cloud provider). The company is strong in foreign language support, especially Asian languages. Catalyst is competitive in the cloud-based, SaaS processing, analysis, review, and production space. The biggest challenge for Catalyst is to gain market share when it is competing with kCura’s Relativity both directly and indirectly (versus the large Relativity channel). There is certainly enough room for both companies to grow, but law firms tend to imitate each other, so the land grab for law firm customers is highly competitive right now. However, Catalyst could be well-positioned if this market shifts focus to using tools with cloud-based architectures.
